There’s a particular guilt that comes with the modern nursery: the plastic that arrives, gets played with for a fortnight, then haunts a cupboard until it’s quietly taken to the tip. The Heirloom Edit is the antidote, toys we’ve genuinely watched go from first child to second to a friend’s child, and come out the other side worth keeping.

None of them are cheap. All of them, spread across a decade and three children, are cheaper than the landfill alternative. These are the ones that earned it. Here are all five.

The shortlist

01 Steiff Classic Teddy Bear in mohair

Steiff

Classic Teddy Bear, 40cm

The “button in ear” since 1880, hand-stitched, mohair, stuffed with wood-wool. The kind of toy a child doesn’t lose so much as inherit. Not for under-threes (the joints and the price both argue against it); for the child you’re prepared to hand something permanent.

02 Grimm's Large Rainbow wooden stacking toy

Grimm’s

Large Rainbow, 12 Pieces

The most photographed toy on the internet, and for once the hype is earned. Babies mouth it, toddlers stack it, five-year-olds build cities with it. Plant-dyed lime wood, solid enough to survive a decade of being trodden on. The defining open-ended toy. More like it in our top 10 wooden toys that last.

03 LEGO DUPLO Classic Brick Box

LEGO

DUPLO Classic Brick Box

The unglamorous answer that’s right anyway. DUPLO doesn’t degrade, doesn’t date, and the set you buy now clicks into the set your second child gets in five years. Bricks from the 1990s still fit. That’s the whole argument.

04 Maileg medium bunny soft toy

Maileg

Medium Bunny

The Danish mouse-and-rabbit world that adults collect as hard as children do. Hand-finished, dressed in linen, posable enough to live a whole imagined life on a child’s shelf. Steep for a soft toy, until you watch one survive a decade of being loved and still look the part. There is a longer look in our Maileg bunny review.

05 Schleich Farm World hand-painted animal figures

Schleich

Farm World Starter Set

Hand-painted, near-indestructible, and the gateway to a habit that runs for years. Each animal is a small, accurate thing a child comes back to long after the flashier toys are forgotten. The cheapest entry here and, per year of play, possibly the best value on the list.
