Review: PlanToys, The Sustainable Wooden Toy Brand Worth the Premium

This article contains affiliate links, we may earn a small commission, at no cost to you. How we make money.

PlanToys is the Thai-based sustainable wooden toy brand that has been making heirloom-quality wooden toys for 40 years. The balance bike is the brand signature, a PlanToys balance bike is £70-£100 (vs the £40 wooden alternatives from the supermarket). The wooden stacking toys, the dollhouse furniture, the pull-along toys, all in the PlanToys catalogue, all at premium prices, all designed to last 20+ years. The honest question: is the PlanToys premium worth paying over the generic wooden alternatives?

The build, in one paragraph

PlanToys uses rubberwood from trees that have already finished their latex-producing lifecycle. The wood is kiln-dried, formaldehyde-free, and finished with non-toxic, water-based paints. The edges are properly rounded. The wheels on the balance bike have rubber treads (not plastic). The screws are recessed. The result: a wooden toy that survives the dishwasher (yes, dishwasher), the back garden, and being passed through 3 children. The finish does not chip, the wheels do not crack, the wood does not splinter.

The sustainability, in real terms

PlanToys is one of the genuinely sustainable toy brands. The materials are certified, the manufacturing is solar-powered, the packaging is recycled. For a family that wants the wooden-toy ethos without buying from a brand that greenwashes, PlanToys is the right call. The premium (£30-£50 more than the supermarket wooden toy) is partly the sustainability, partly the build, and partly the design that does not date.

The pieces worth the premium

  • PlanToys Balance Bike, £80, the right bike for 2-4 year olds, hand-downs beautifully
  • PlanToys Stacking Rings, £25, 6 rings of different sizes and colours, 5+ years of use
  • PlanToys Dollhouse Furniture, £30-£50 per room, designed to fit standard dollhouses
  • PlanToys Pull-Along Duck, £20, the right first walking companion

Score: 8.5/10. The build is real, the sustainability is real, the design is real. The premium buys a real thing, not a brand tax.
