After six months of research into the Steiff Classic Teddy Bear. Here is the editorial verdict.

Classic Teddy Bear (35cm)
Mohair plush, hand-finished in Giengen. Built to be loved for forty years, not forty weeks.
Check price at AmazonThe Steiff bear is one of those products you’ve heard about for years. When you finally hold one, you understand the fuss. Mohair plush, soft in a way nylon plush never is. Stuffed firm enough to retain shape, soft enough to cuddle. The seams are hand-finished. The famous button in the left ear is the company’s promise of authenticity since 1904.
If you buy one toy this year, make it a Steiff bear. Owner reports describe their children dragging it everywhere, beach, restaurants, A&E once. It washes well (gentle cycle, mesh bag). The mohair has gained character rather than worn out. The button is intact. The eyes haven’t dulled.
This is a toy you buy for one child and pass to their child. Cost-per-decade analysis: extraordinary.

Cons
- The price (£85 to £145) is a deterrent if you’re not committed to the heirloom logic
- Limited colour variation, they’re bears, not unicorns
- Tagged “Made in China” on some lines, check before buying if origin matters to you
