The Back-to-School Edit

Nobody wants to think about September in the second week of July, which is exactly why this edit exists. Right now the back-to-school rails are freshly stocked and the fitting benches are empty; by late August the popular sizes go first and you pay the same money for whatever is left. So here is the early list: six pieces, bought once and bought well, sorted before the holidays properly get going, so August can stay a holiday. (Our summer edit is still handling that part.)

The school shoe: Start-Rite Rhino Sherman

Start with the feet, because that is where the August scramble bites hardest: shoe shops run on fittings, and in the last week of the holidays the appointment book and the size wall empty at the same time. The Vinylon F fabric swells slightly when damp, so drizzle beads off rather than soaking through to the reading folder, and the whole thing wipes clean after whatever happened at the water table. The 12oz Kid Kanteen is sized for small hands and bottle pockets, and the caps are sold separately as replacements, so a chewed spout costs a few pounds rather than a new bottle. The everyday rail: Polarn O Pyret basics

Not one product but a rail.
